An investigation is underway in Paris to determine the exact cause of the Notre Dame Cathedral fire. French officials sent experts to the famous cathedral Thursday for its first examination since last week’s devastating blaze.

A spokesperson from Paris’ prosecutor’s office said investigators are looking for clues as to what caused the fire and are considering all potential leads.

Some officials believe the fire was accidental, and was possibly caused by a short circuit. Meanwhile, workers involved in the renovation told investigators they left behind cigarette butts, which may have played a role in sparking the fire.

“We have to know what really happened because some say there was security failures, but we don’t have any confirmations yet. We have to establish the origin of the fire, it can’t just burn like that.” — Francoise Fusillier, Paris resident

French President Emmanuel Macron called on renovations to be sped up Wednesday, proposing a new deadline of just five-years.
