A helicopter recently crashed into a Hawaii community, killing all three people on board. Paramedics responded to the fatal crash Monday after residents reported hearing a “horrific bang” outside Honolulu.

The aircraft appeared to have hit the ground nose first, sending debris up to 100 yards away. Authorities believe the pilot may have intentionally crashed into the road to minimize casualties on the ground.

When first responders arrived on scene, they found neighbors trying to pull the victims away from the fire.

“Neighbors were doing a heroic job trying to put out the fire and also trying to get the patients away from the burning aircraft,” explained Shayne Enright, spokesperson for Honolulu EMS. “EMS assisted, got two of the patients from the burning aircraft, but at that time the two were deceased.”

Members of the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration were on the ground investigating the cause of the crash.
